A Grand Prix Cupola Contest or "12 Hours of Kidwelly"

WORLD'S SMALLEST CUPOLA!

History of Proposals

"Ladies and Gentlemen, Start your Cupolas!"

A Grand Prix Cupola Contest or "12 Hours of Kidwelly"

A contest of planning, design, efficiency, and practicality, the cupola contest builds upon the ingenuity demonstrated by Charles Hook's "Suitcase Cupola" at the 2nd Conference in 1996. It is a two tier competition, with professional and amateur divisions. Competition is limited to ten teams in each division, timely registration and prior operation is encouraged.

Rules of the road:

The cupola will arrive at the starting line in Kidwelly at 9AM on the day of competition, complete with ladle and tools for assembly and operation, but disassembled, in a suitcase. Everything used for assembly and operation must arrive in the same suitcase. Refractory for lining, leaf blowers for blast, bott materials, and propane for burn-in will be provided by the conference. Charges, botts, and molds will be prepared by each team the day before the competition. The competition ends at 9 PM.

The cupola is limited to 10 litres (10000 cubic centimeters) total displacement inside the lining; style and configuration is up to the participating teams.

At the drop of the green starting flag, each team will assemble, line, fire-in, and begin operation of their entry. Each team is restricted to four personnel in the "pits" at any time; substitutions are permitted on a "tag team" basis, where the contestant must leave the competition area when they are "relieved". All participants must be in proper safety attire for the activity while they are inside the competition area.

As with any dangerous competition, there is a provision for a yellow, "caution", flag that proscribes any continuation of the activity until the "caution" is lifted by the judges. There may be "cautions" at any time, during assembly or operation. If there is a caution during assembly, all teams must retire to the back of the pit and wait for the green flag that indicates resumed assembly. During an operation caution, each team will tap their furnace, turn off the blast, and "bank" their cupola until the green flag indicates a resumption of operation. There may be many cautions, some purely arbitrary, upon the discretion of the judges. Substitutions and hydration/relief are allowed during the "caution" period.

Unsafe or reckless conduct will result in disqualification for any team deemed guilty of inappropriate behavior by the judges. All judges' decisions are final and are not subject to revision or appeal.

The goal of each team is to successfully pour a series of six "qualification molds" provided by the conference; further molds are at the discretion of the participants. However, prizes will be awarded on the basis of certain objectives and standards:

1) First metal successfully poured into a mold
2) Most metal poured into molds by weight
3) Most molds poured by number count, bring your own patterns
4) Most unique cupola design
5) Most technologically innovative cupola design
6) Most "aesthetic cupola
7) Best dressed crew
8) Best showmanship by a crew
9) Most safety conscious crew
10) Sexiest crew (to be determined by a separate, mixed gender, panel)
11) Best operating crew
12) Easiest bottom drop

A "Grand Prix" Winner will be determined by point accumulation of successful of category objective completion. In the event of a numerical tie, the judging panel will determine the winner from among the tied contestants.

All award decisions by the judges are final and not subject to appeal.

Come one, come all........... Bring your wee-tiny furnace to operate during the contest at the conference in hopes of winning the title of
